Business Training for Direct Sellers - based on the Direct Selling Entrepreneurship Program Curriculum, a joint project of the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF) and National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) - is designed to equip direct sellers with small business management and entrepreneurial skills to operate more successful direct selling businesses. The 10-module course introduces the fundamental components of small business management including: marketing; finance; legal issues; planning; and skills important to entrepreneurial business success. You will gain a deep understanding of a wide variety of direct selling business strategies including individual sales efforts, party plan and network marketing scenarios, online sales and sales force recruitment and training.

During the 
Business Training for Direct Sellers experience you will learn how to:

  • Apply the fundamental skills of successful small business management
  • Develop customer relationships that last
  • Execute effective communication, sales & distribution strategies
  • Attract a sales force, train and retain them
  • Financially manage your business

Thriving Local: Business Planning Series  

Education This training series targets entrepreneurs who have started or are thinking about starting a food-related venture that is not tied to large-scale, commodity-style production or sales. 

The materials are specifically designed for individuals who are pursuing innovative ideas and enhanced marketing opportunities within the local food eco-system. The 10-session series is delivered over 13 weeks via live, in-class instruction, lab sessions and one-on-one coaching. 

Upon completion you will:

  • Understand and develop a mission statement, goals and objectives
  • Understand the planning process
  • Identify and select a legal structure for your business
  • Understand the concept of managing human resources
  • Understand marketing issues and their day-to-day impact on company profitability
  • Examine preliminary production potential
  • Examine promotional tools and select the most effective mix for your business
  • Gain an understanding of the basic uses of financial information
  • Explore how budgets provide performance feedback for the business
  • Learn tools used for financial statement analysis
  • Gain information about different conventional and non-traditional sources of financing
  • Illustrate realistic options and barriers for financing your business
  • Recognize the pitfalls of unmanaged growth, and gain an understanding of managed growth
  • Explore estate planning, succession issues and exit strategies
  • Create a business plan to guide the launch and growth of your venture

One of the outcomes is to develop a business plan to guide the launch and growth of your business. Another aspect to this training is to assist you to develop your managerial, entrepreneurial and personal maturity skill sets. This process is proven and will enable you to become a proactive, skillful, well-informed entrepreneur.

Interactive sessions are held once each week for three hours. During that time you will be introduced to basic business fundamentals and encouraged to apply what you’re learning, immediately to your situation. 

Each session features a guest expert speaker who is knowledgeable and informed about the local food industry. Guest speakers offer insight and the opportunity to build your business network. Guest entrepreneurs and small business owners share their businesses, challenges and recommendations to enable your success. 

Each week you will complete a specific section of your business plan making it easy to develop this critical management tool.
